Question: What is God?
Answers: God is the creator and sustainer of everyone and everything. He is eternal, infinite, and unchangeable in his power and perfection, goodness and glory, wisdom, justice, and truth. Nothing happens except through him and by his will.
Scripture: Psalm 86:8-10, 15
The first four words of the Bible are the most profound in all of Scripture, “In the beginning, God… (Genesis 1:1)” These four words teach us that God exists outside of time, space, and matter. At the beginning there was just God. These four words generate awe, wonder, fear, and humility. This eternal nature of God also points to the creativeness of God. Genesis 1:1 continues, “God created the heavens and the earth.” God, existing outside of time, space, and matter, speaks and creates all that exists. In contrast to the Deistic worldview, God did not create the heavens and the earth and then withdraw; but instead, God continues to speak into His creation revealing Himself to man through His Word (Hebrews 1:1-2). His Word reveals that He is eternal, infinite, unchangeable, good, glorious, wise, just, truthful, and sovereign. While there are many other of God’s attributes written in Scripture, these represent the differences between Yahweh God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob and all other gods created by human imagination. To boil the attributes of God down to a simple statement would be that God is Holy and He is wholly different from any other created thing.
