Question: How can we glorify God?

Answer: We glorify God by enjoying him, loving him, trusting him, and by obeying his will, commands, and law.

Scripture: Deuteronomy 11:1

The Psalmist wrote, “Declare [Yahweh’s] glory among the nations…Ascribe to Yahweh the glory due his name (Psalm 96:3, 8).” This Psalm of worship describes the duty of all of God’s creatures: the glorification of God. Last week we discovered that we are made in the image of God and the purpose of that image is greater than the content of that image. We are to image God; or to put another way, we are to be a reflection of God. The Apostle Paul writes three times in the first chapter of his letter to the Ephesians that God acts, “to the praise of His glory (Ephesians 1:3-14).” In other words, God’s glory is His primary motivating factor. And as images of God, we too are called to make God’s glory our own motivating factor. At this point there may be those who object, “Who is God to make His own glory the ultimate objective of creation?” God acts for His own glory because His glory is the ultimate good and He calls us to live for His glory because He loves and cares for us. If God were to call us to anything less than His glory, He would be calling us to live for something less than ultimate good. Do we want a God that withholds from us ultimate good? No. Therefore, God must call us to glorify Him for our ultimate good. And we glorify Him most when we center every aspect of our lives around Him. As the Apostle Paul writes to the church in Corinth, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).”
